Apple released the Public beta for macOS 11 Big Sur a few days ago, installing it it's pretty straight foward, here's a little guide and how to fix some common problems you may encounter installing it.

Installing the beta the easy way

To enroll in the public beta and install it just visit the oficial enroll page, and follow the steps stated, they're pretty easy to follow.

Some common problems

Update doesn't show on system preferences

To force the update check, run the following command on the terminal

softwareupdate -l

Or force the download with

sudo softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 10.16

You have a different seed installed

You can control the seed setting on macOS with the seedutil tool.

To check your current enrolled seed run

sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil current

To unroll the current seed

sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil unenroll

To enroll the Public Beta seed

sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil enroll PublicSeed

To enroll the Developer seed

sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil enroll DeveloperSeed

To enroll the Customer seed (Default, this one it's just gonna work when Big Sur releases officialy)

sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil enroll CustomerSeed

If none of those worked you can force the catalog update

sudo /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --set-catalog
